Period of Ripening
We expect 2019 to be a wonderful year, but thanks to a cool May, not as early as 2018 or 2015.
Ripening had started by the end of July. Now the berries are getting softer, and red varietals have started to change color. Earlier the vine used its energy mainly to entwine around the wires and grow towards the sun. Having accomplished this task, energy is diverted and now mostly serves to store sugar and other reserves including some aromatic components into the berries.
A dry, beautiful and not too hot Autumn may come, then we may get great quality again.
We will soon have finished the filling of our “2019 reserves”. On September 6th all our “Erste Lagen” (wines of 1st growth vineyards) will be presented at Schloss Grafenegg together with all our fellows of the traditional Austrian growers (Österreichische Traditionsweingüter).
