Ried Loiserberg

Grüner Veltliner

2021

Kamptal DAC, Erste Lage ÖTW

Apple, fresh pears and hay flowers, rich and solid, though still somewhat reduced but truly pithy, some pome fruit in the “umami” mid palate, well balanced by vibrant acidity, promising.

This wine derives from a vineyard on the “Loiserberg” wherein one also finds the site “Berg Vogelsang”. The difference is that the Grüner Veltliner from “Loiserberg” grows on a south to southeast facing slope, which is less exposed to the winds. The soil stems from primary rock geologically defined as zoisite-amphibolite, which is decomposing granite consisting of gneiss, mica-schist, and some clay and loess.

Very cool nose with a lot of subtle wildflower and herb aromas. Sleek and youthful with stunning mineral vitality, this leaps and bounds across the palate. Stunning vibrancy is married to a slew of wet-stone and Amalfi-lemon character at the very long and straight finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The 2021 vintage
To think that the year started modestly enough: the weather was rather cool and moody. With the exception of some almost summerly warm days over Easter these conditions lasted far into May, delaying sprouting while also contributing to the fact that the Kamptal did not suffer serious late frost damages. There was not an abundance of rain at first, however, until Pentecost there was enough to secure a constant water supply to the vines. Consequently we saw a late but beautiful and short flowering. And we were very lucky to have been largely spared the hail storms that hit Austria. Only by mid-September, just before another delayed start...

Maturation

The wine is fermented at a moderate 15-20°C before being racked into large wooden casks for further maturing.
